About Us

The Calo Family is deeply rooted in Butuan City, Philippines. Family legend relates that the original family name was "Calo- juangco" of Chinese origin. Later it was shortened to "Calo" to make it less Chinese sounding during the Spanish period when discrimination against the Chinese was prevalent.  Calo is the family name of the matriarch of the  clan, Vicenta Calo.  She and her descendants could not officially carry the patriarch's family name "Nepumuceno" as customary since their union could not be officially tied by a marriage. Research on official records done by the Calo clan in Madrid, Spain during the 1970's confirmed that indeed the partriach was a full pledge friar/ priest of the Catholic Church at that time he was assigned to the Philipines.    

Manuel Calo y Leyson is a 5th generation off-spring of Pedro N. Calo, oldest son of Vicenta and Telesforo. See the Genealogy page of this website for the complete trace.  Juanita Patuasi y Fernandez hails from Cebu City. From their union sprang the eleven (11) family branches that are listed in this website's menu as the 6th  Generation.  Unable to financially recover from the world War 2 devastation,  Manuel and Juanita brought home their family back to Butuan in the 1950's.  The journey of the 6th generation was not an easy one.  Through sheer grit and hard work, they were able to provide better for their 7th generation.  This website tells the story of the descendants of Lolo Awe (Manuel) and Lola Nitang (Juanita).   

Just like any other family that keeps growing in numbers and georaphically spreading, keeping track of the lineage will sooner rather than later become a challenging endeavor. The first attempt to document the details of the family tree from the 5th generation onwards was presented during the family reunion in December 2007.  Head count in December 2007 was at 126.   See the latest tally below.
