Butuan Cityhood

There was Butuan when the Philippines was not yet . . .

Butuan's cityhood - a dream made real by a Calo.  Congressman Marcos (Kakoy) Calo is the father of Butuan City.  Kakoy Calo and Manuel Calo were first cousins.  His wife, Consuelo (Choleng) Villanueva- Calo was Agusan del Norte's Governor for 30 years. BUTUAN became a city in 02 August 1959 through Republuic Act No. 523  See related article in the Homepage's Historic Butuan section (lower part).

Movie Buffs

Erlinda Calo, second child of Manuel and Juanita was Auntie Linda or Auntie Manay to her nieces and nephews.  Who would ever forget how she religiously patronized the movie house every Sunday without fail- come hell or high water!

Auntie Alice, a.k.a. Auntie ng Bayan can never go to a movie without a barangay of nieces and nephews in tow.  The viewing would not be complete without the perrineal baon of hot pandesal and ice water.  Fighting for their share of the hot pande sal and ice water was the highlight of the "picnic" rather than the movie itself.  The noise of the eating and quarelling over the baon often drowned out the movie's sound system!

Magic Unlan

Did you know that Janice Burias has a magic unlan (pillow)?  it must have some magical powers since she never let go of it since she was a baby, hates to have it washed and could not sleep without it.  Now, a nurse in Los Angeles, California, USA with three kids of her own, Balut, as we fondly called her when she was a little girl, has passed on the ritual to her own kid.  hmm, Janice would you mind sharing your anting-anting?

Urios Builders

Urios College, now Father Saturnino Urios University, is the primer private school in the Caraga Region.  Engr. Alexander B. Calo and Engr. Rex Arbie (dodong) C. Burias, both 7th Generation Descendants of Manuel Calo & Juanita Pauasi have contributed their own engineering talents in the building of Urios' gymnasium as well as the old and new campuses.
